AFTER SURGERY

Phase I PACU

Immediately after your surgery, you will be moved to our Phase I recovery area where you will be carefully monitored by members of the nursing and anesthesia staff, as well as your physician. During the phase of recovery you will be placed on a heart monitor that continuously monitors your pulse and blood pressure. You may feel a tightness around your arm every few minutes as the blood pressure cuff inflates.
A finger cover is placed on your finger. It tells us how much oxygen is in your blood and how well you are breathing.
Your temperature will be taken by placement of a small probe in the outer ear canal. It is a quick way to check your temperature. You will feel a slight pressure in your ear when this is done.
When you first wake up you may have an oxygen mask covering your mouth and nose. It is important to keep it on until your nurse removes it.
The nurse will assess your comfort level. Your physician will order appropriate medication to keep you comfortable.

Phase II PACU
Once you are sufficiently awake and comfortable, you will be transferred to a recliner chair in the Phase 2 PACU.
Some patients who receive a light anesthetic may be brought directly to Phase 2 recovery from the operating room.
In Phase 2, while you continue your recovery, a family member or friend will be able to visit with you.
Recovery time varies for each patient depending on the response to anesthesia. You may experience some drowsiness or dizziness after surgery, depending on the type of anesthesia you received. However, with the newest medications and anesthetic the time required for monitored recovery in our facility has been greatly reduced. This means that you can safely get back to your own home and familiar surroundings much faster.
We encourage an adult of your choice to stay at the SurgiCenter during your surgery and recovery so that we have a contact person available to speak to about your care.
Before you are discharged home, your discharge instructions will be reviewed with you and your family member by the nurse caring for you. All of your questions will be answered before you go home. You will receive a written copy of full discharge instructions for your care once you arrive home.

Satisfaction Survey
We are interested in how satisfied your were with your experience at the SurgiCenter of Baltimore. Therefore we ask our patients to complete an automated satisfaction survey prior to discharge from the Center. This is a simple to use, computer-generated questionnaire about your experience at our Center. Your nurse will assist you in its use. In order for us to improve our service, it is important that you be honest in your answers.
