PREPARING FOR THE DAY OF SURGERY

It is essential to your health and the success of your surgery that you follow these instructions. Please read them carefully and ask questions about any instructions you may not understand.

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the night before surgery. This includes water, mints, chewing gum, lozenges, and chewing tobacco. It is important to keep your stomach completely empty, as food in the stomach can cause serious complications with anesthesia.
It is recommended that you refrain from smoking after midnight the night before surgery. Smoking immediately before or after receiving an anesthetic may interfere with the anesthetic and frequently produces nausea during the recovery period.
Check with your physician or call the SurgiCenter (410) 356-0300 about medications you are taking to see whether you should continue dosages prior to surgery. Please bring a list of medicines, including the dosages, you are currently taking. Herbal Medications and the diet drug "Phentermine" need to be stopped 2 weeks prior to surgery.
Call your physician immediately if you develop a cold, cough, fever or skin infection that might interfere with the surgical area.
Remove eye make-up and false eye lashes prior to surgery.
Contact lenses must be removed prior to surgery. This includes extended wear lenses. Please bring your container. Any questions regarding this will be addressed on your arrival to the Center.
Wear comfortable loose fitting clothing and flat shoes. A warm-up or jogging suit is perfect for comfort and dressing easily after surgery.
Remove all jewelry and body piercing prior to arrival to the facility.
Please arrive promptly, at least one hour prior to surgery, to allow for necessary pre-operative preparation. Come directly to the SurgiCenter of Baltimore and sign in at the front desk.
Arrange for a family member or friend to drive you home. No surgical patient will be allowed to leave the facility without an accompanying adult. That person may stay at the SurgiCenter or be called when you are ready to go home. A taxi may be used only if you have an adult to accompany you.
To maximize the comfort of all visitors, we suggest you limit the number of people accompanying you to only one person and request you do not bring children unless they are supervised by a responsible adult.
Regarding our pediatric population, we welcome both parents to accompany our pediatric patients. The parents may accompany the child into the pre-operative area and may go into the operating room until the child is asleep then will be escorted back to the waiting room. We ask that at least one parent stay in the facility the entire time your minor child is with us. Once the procedure is completed, and the child is awakening in the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, the parents will be called to be with them. Only parents will be allowed in the PACU. Other family members will be expected to wait in the waiting room until the child is discharged.
Please note that the use of cellular phones results in interference with our monitoring and computer networks. We ask that you refrain from using them while in our facility
